Paint shops are a veritable chemical process factory, and often the biggest focus is on filtering paint particles and aerosols. But what about gases? Many novice entrepreneurs or even experienced professionals underestimate the need for effective gas cleaning in these premises. I remember how in one workshop we first started working on mechanical filtration, and then a year later it turned out that the smell of solvents was still noticeable, and working in such conditions became tiring and even harmful to health. This made us think seriously about more comprehensive solutions, about the use ofchemical filters.
Gas emissions in paint shops are a serious problem that often cannot be easily solved mechanically. We are not only talking about the smell, which irritates and reduces performance, but also about potentially dangerous substances: volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehydes, isocyanates - depending on the paints and solvents used. These substances can cause headaches, nausea, allergic reactions, and in the long term, serious illness. Often, even if ventilation requirements are met, gases continue to spread, especially in areas where personnel and equipment are concentrated.
Simply using carbon filters, although effective for odors, is not always enough to neutralize all harmful substances. Different VOCs have different adsorption capacities, and the carbon can simply become overloaded, requiring frequent replacement. Moreover, carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas that is not usually removed by carbon filters. Therefore, selection of the optimal typechemical filteris a task that requires careful analysis of the composition of the gas flow.
There are several main typeschemical filters, which are used in paint shops. The most common adsorption filters are those that use activated carbon, but its modifications significantly expand the possibilities. For example, there are filters with impregnated activated carbon, which more effectively adsorbs certain gases, or filters with the addition of zeolites - crystalline aluminosilicates that can selectively bind certain pollutants. Scrubbers are also used - systems that purify gases by contacting them with a liquid, for example, with an alkali solution to neutralize acidic gases.
The choice of a specific filter type depends on the composition of the gas stream, the required degree of purification and the budget. Sometimes a combination of several types of filters is an effective solution, such as a carbon filter for odors and a scrubber to neutralize acid gases. It is important to understand that the effectiveness of the filter greatly depends on proper operation and timely replacement of filter materials. Otherwise, instead of cleaning, the filter may become a source of contamination.
We recently worked with a workshop that used acrylic paints. Painting produced significant amounts of VOCs, particularly ethyl acetate and methyl ethyl ketone. Standard carbon filters quickly become overloaded, resulting in poor air quality and increased filter media replacement costs. We suggested usingchemical filterswith modified activated carbon impregnated with special substances that increase the adsorption capacity for ethyl acetate and methyl ethyl ketone. As a result, cleaning efficiency has increased significantly and filter replacement costs have decreased. We even had to change the ventilation system parameters to optimize the adsorption process.
It is important to understand that the use of chemical filters requires not only the correct choice of filter material, but also a careful calculation of the required filter performance, as well as taking into account all factors affecting the cleaning efficiency: temperature, humidity, air flow speed. You can't just 'screw' a filter onto the hood and expect a miracle. An integrated approach is required, including analysis of the composition of the gas flow, calculation of filter performance and regular monitoring of its efficiency.
Company ?Tianjin Tongchang Junqi Cleaning Equipment? Works closely with the Air Conditioning Research Institute of the China Institute of Building Sciences. This experience allows us not only to use advanced technologies in productionchemical filters, but also to keep abreast of the latest developments in the field of gas cleaning. For example, we are currently working on creating filters that can remove not only VOCs, but also formaldehyde, which is an urgent task for paint shops that use particleboard (chipboard) and other materials containing formaldehyde.
We took part in the development of the national standard GB/T-13554 “High Efficiency Air Filters”, which speaks of our experience and expertise in this area. This allows us to offer clients not just ready-made solutions, but individual developments that take into account the specifics of their production. We always strive to ensure that our products meet the highest quality and safety requirements.
In conclusion, I would like to emphasize once again that the choice and applicationchemical filtersfor cleaning gas contaminants in paint shops is a serious task that requires a professional approach. You shouldn’t skimp on the quality of filter materials and don’t hope for a miracle. It is important to regularly monitor filter efficiency, promptly replace filter materials and monitor the condition of equipment. Otherwise, instead of cleaning the air, you may create an even bigger problem.
Also, it is worth paying attention to regulatory requirements for air emissions. Different regions have different rules, and failure to comply with these rules can result in fines and suspension of the business. We always help our clients understand these issues and find solutions that meet all requirements.
