Despite its widespread popularity, the topicframeless high-efficiency filtersoften presented in a simplified manner. Many manufacturers and sellers focus only on the stated efficiency, leaving out critical details: installation features, impact on air flow, durability and compatibility with various systems. In this article, I would like to share my experience with such filters, without embellishing the reality and highlighting some things that are worth thinking about before purchasing.
Let's start with the most obvious - what is meant by the term 'unframed'. This is a filter that does not have a rigid housing. Typically these are fibrous filter elements supported by mesh or other soft materials, allowing flexible adaptation to different HVAC systems. This approach offers several advantages: ease of installation, ease of use in limited spaces, and potentially more efficient use of filtration space. Unlike case-mounted ones, they do not create significant airflow resistance, which is of course important for maintaining optimal system performance.
However, the lack of a body is also a challenge. Careful consideration must be given to the mounting design to ensure a secure fit and prevent damage to the filter material. In my experience, there was often a problem with incorrectly selected fasteners, which led to a loose fit of the filter to the air duct and, as a result, to a decrease in its efficiency. For example, we once encountered a situation where the chosen fastener turned out to be too tight, which led to deformation of the filter and its rapid failure. This, of course, involves unnecessary costs and equipment downtime.
The level of efficiency is, of course, a key indicator. The values declared by manufacturers often seem overestimated. It is important to understand that the effectiveness of a filter is determined not only by its nominal class (for example, G4, F7, M8), but also by its ability to capture dust of certain sizes. For example, an F7 filter can effectively capture dust up to 10 microns in size, but this does not mean that it will completely clean the air of small particles.
In our practice, we have repeatedly observed situations where a filter with a high nominal class did not provide the required level of air purification in conditions of high dust content. This is usually due to suboptimal installation or non-compliance with the recommended replacement regimen. Improper installation can lead to the formation of cracks through which dust can enter the room. In addition, the filter must be replaced regularly according to the manufacturer's recommendations, otherwise its effectiveness will be reduced.
We often useframeless filtersin ventilation systems of industrial premises and workshops. This is especially true for rooms where a high degree of air purification from dust and small particles is required. For example, in one of our projects we installed such filters in a wood processing workshop. This made it possible to significantly reduce the amount of dust in the air and improve working conditions for workers. The choice of a specific filter model depended on the required level of air purification and the characteristics of the air flow in the system.
However, it is worth noting thatframeless filtersrequire more careful maintenance than cabinets. Their condition must be checked regularly and, if necessary, cleaned or replaced. It is also important to consider that they may be more sensitive to vibrations and shocks. If installed or used incorrectly, they can quickly fail. This is especially true for places with high vibration of equipment.
Installationframeless high-efficiency filterrequires certain skills and knowledge. Often the problem arises with adapting to the existing duct system. It is not always possible to immediately select the ideal filter size and shape. Sometimes you have to resort to modifications to the air ducts or use special adapters. This aspect is often underestimated, but it can have a significant impact on filtration efficiency.
We are faced with a situation where an attempt to use the standardframeless filterinto an air duct with a non-standard cross-section led to a significant drop in system performance. We had to order the production of a special adapter, which increased the cost of the project and the time frame for its implementation. Therefore, before choosing a filter, it is necessary to carefully measure the dimensions of the air ducts and take into account possible difficulties during installation.
Despite all the shortcomings,open-frame high-efficiency filtersremain a relevant solution for ventilation and air conditioning systems. The current trend is toward the development of more efficient and durable filter materials, as well as improved filter designs and mounting systems. There is also a growing demand for automatic filter condition monitoring systems, which allows timely identification of the need to replace them.
We actively monitor new developments in this area and are constantly expanding the range of products we offer. In the future, we plan to focus on development and productionframeless high-efficiency filterswith improved characteristics and simplified installation. We also plan to develop a filter condition monitoring system that will allow our customers to more effectively manage their ventilation and air conditioning systems.
