Panel frame filter

Panel frame filter

Panel frame filter...Sounds simple, right? But in practice it's a whole different story. Often beginners perceive this as a 'flat filter', and everything is clear - the design is visually simple. But when it comes to choosing a material, optimizing geometry and taking into account operating conditions, there are many nuances that affect the efficiency and durability of the entire air purification system. I myself learned a lot from my mistakes a couple of years ago, and I want to share my experience. I don’t pretend to be the absolute truth, but I hope it will be useful.

What is a panel frame filter and what is it for?

So, what kind of animal is this?Panel frame filter- this is, in fact, a filter element that consists of a frame (usually an aluminum or steel profile) and a filter material fixed to this frame. This frame provides rigidity and facilitates installation of the filter in the air purification unit. The main task, of course, is to clean the air from various contaminants: dust, suspended particles, smoke, even some microorganisms, depending on the filter material used. They are used almost everywhere: from industrial enterprises to medical institutions and residential premises. In our business, like many others, they are a key element in ventilation and air conditioning systems.

Unlike, say, cartridge filters, panel designs usually have a larger filtration area with smaller dimensions. This is very important when space is limited but high performance is required. Another advantage is the relatively easy replacement of filter material, which reduces system maintenance costs. For example, we often recommend them for rooms with increased requirements for air purity, such as laboratories or production workshops, where a lot of dust and small particles are generated.

Filter element materials: what to look for

Selecting a filter material is a critical step. There is no universal solution here; specific tasks need to be taken into account. One of the most common options is synthetic fabrics (polyester, polypropylene). They hold mechanical dirt well and are quite durable. But if you need to capture smaller particles, for example, bacteria or viruses, then preference is given to filters made of denser materials with smaller pore sizes. For example, HEPA filters or FFP class filters.

Another point that is often overlooked is wetted filters. They are effective at trapping dust, smoke and odors, but require regular moistening. This can be either simply spraying water or connecting to a humid air supply system. We've run into problems a couple of times due to the wrong choice of wetted filter - either it clogs quickly or requires too much humidification, which leads to increased energy consumption of the system. In such cases, it is better to return to simpler, but more reliable options.

Design Optimization: Flow and Distribution Issues

Simply attaching the filter material to the frame is half the battle. It is important to think through the design in such a way as to ensure uniform distribution of air flow over the entire filter area. Uneven flow can lead to 'dead zones' where the filter media is not used effectively and where media is overloaded and worn out prematurely in other areas. For example, we once installed a filter with a good theoretical area, but due to the incorrect geometry of the frame, the air flow passed only through the central part. As a result, most of the filter material remained unused, and the filter had to be changed much more often than planned.

Another problem is flow resistance. The denser the filter media, the higher the resistance, and the more energy is required to pump air through the system. Therefore, when choosing a filter, it is necessary to take into account the characteristics of the fan and the overall power of the system. Sometimes there is a trade-off between filtration efficiency and power consumption. We always try to carry out calculations and simulations to minimize pressure losses and ensure optimal performance.

Real cases and mistakes

We worked with one large production, where we usedpanel frame filtersfor cleaning the air from chips and dust. Initially, they chose the cheapest option, without paying attention to the material of the frame and filter material. After six months, the filters began to corrode, the filter material quickly became clogged, and the system’s performance dropped sharply. We had to replace all the filters with better ones, which turned out to be more expensive than if we had initially chosen a reliable option.

Another case is installing a filter in a room with high humidity. The filter material, not intended for use in a humid environment, quickly deformed and lost its properties. Obviously, it is necessary to take into account operating conditions when choosing a filter. Nowadays, we always clarify information about the environment with the customer before offering a specific solution.

Prospects and trends

There is a trend towards using more environmentally friendly filter materials, such as filters made from recycled plastic or biodegradable fibres. The direction of creating self-cleaning filters is also actively developing, which can extend their service life and reduce maintenance costs. And, of course, there is a growing demand for filters with integrated sensors that allow you to monitor the condition of the filter and promptly replace it.

In general, panel frame filter– this is not just a “flat filter”, but a complex and multifaceted element of an air purification system. And for it to work efficiently and long-lasting, it is necessary to take into account many factors: from the material of the filter element to the geometry of the frame and operating conditions.
